One experience. Four regions. A world worth exploring.

Global onboarding programmes often struggle with a fundamental tension: they need to deliver a consistent experience while feeling personal and relevant to each new joiner. The brief was to create a distinctive visual world that would make onboarding memorable — and feel like something genuinely worth spending time with.

"It was unlike any onboarding I'd experienced before." — New Joiner, Expedia Group

Eight islands. Four regions. One connected world.

The solution was an archipelago of eight islands — Volcanic, Polar, Archaeological, Animal, Manmade, Tropical, Urban, and Tech — each mapped to a real geographic location across the four regions.

Each island was delivered as an interactive e-learning module built in Articulate Rise, all housed within a custom SharePoint hub. A cast of characters, a system of illustrated environments, and a guided narrative structure transformed what could have been a tedious process into something genuinely engaging.

Making AI feel approachable to an entire organisation.

Expedia Group needed to build meaningful AI literacy across thousands of employees — from leadership to front-line teams. The programme covered GenAI basics, large language models, and how to use these tools effectively in their roles.

The brief required both a strong visual identity and learning experiences that felt genuinely engaging — not another compliance module.

A universe theme, stunning photography, and extending the platform's native capabilities with custom-built interactive components.

I developed a universe and stars visual identity for the programme — deep space photography, an immersive dark palette, and a sense of scale and possibility that immediately set the tone for the learning experience.

Where Articulate Rise couldn't go far enough, I built what was needed. Using GitHub Copilot alongside my own working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, I created three custom interactive components that extended the platform beyond its standard capabilities.

"The best training so far at EG. Well done, team!" — Employee, Expedia Group

These included two parallax scroll experiences — full-bleed photography that stays fixed as text slides over it, creating a cinematic depth effect — and a horizontal card carousel that let learners explore use cases in a more engaging, interactive way.

Custom parallax scroll — full-bleed photography stays fixed as text slides over it. Try scrolling inside.

Each component was built from scratch and embedded directly into Articulate Rise — extending the platform's native scroll, hover, and interaction behaviours with hand-written HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

A second parallax treatment — the starfield stays fixed as the text scrolls over it. Try scrolling inside.

About

Sarah Shenton

I'm a Senior Visual Editor and graphic designer specialising in learning content, information design, and digital learning experiences. I create clear, engaging, audience-focused content that brings ideas to life — whether that's through illustration, visual storytelling, or interactive design.

With a background spanning learning design, editorial storytelling, and AI-assisted design-to-code work, I bring a strong mix of visual judgement, concept development, and editorial sophistication to every project.

Previously at Expedia Group, where I spent ten years as the team's sole graphic design specialist — working across Canva, SharePoint, Articulate Rise, and beyond, from concept through to delivery. When the tools run out of steam, I code custom solutions.
